Slip ratings, P0 to P5

What the P number on a tile means, and which one to use where.

P ratings come from the wet pendulum test in AS 4586: P0 is the least grip, P5 the most. The NCC sets no number for a house bathroom floor; P3 is the usual minimum people work to for bathroom and laundry floors, and P4 or P5 for outdoor areas, ramps and pool surrounds, as in the Standards Australia handbook HB 198. A higher rating is grippier but rougher underfoot and harder to clean.

Reading a rating

  • One number (P3): tested wet with the pendulum. This is the number that matters for a floor that gets wet.
  • Two numbers (P2 / P4): usually an inside face and an outside face, or dry and wet results. Use the wet, outside-rated face where grip matters.
  • "Slip resistant" with no number: the supplier has not published a P rating. Ask for the test report before you use it on a wet floor.
  • Ratings are for new tiles. They drop with wear and depend on the batch. Suppliers will send a current test report on request.
